All my work is based on utilitarian archetypes but influenced by architecture. I make teapots because of the challenge and because I love the expressive nature of the gesture, driven by the thrust of the spout. These will hold tea (not much) and pour (strangely). They are designed to give the owner something new to look at with each viewing.

About the Artist
I really love moving clay around, and am fascinated by the changing moods of this medium. I approach the work as a dialog or a partnered dance, listening and following as much as directing. Most of my work starts on the wheel, but doesn’t stay that way. I just can’t leave anything alone. I strive to throw like a hand builder, and will work on a piece until it surprises me with its newness. The work is mostly founded on utilitarian context (“teapot”, “lidded jar”, “bowl”’ etc.), but often not restricted by usefulness. I am more interested in the gesture of the genre, and am concerned with the sculptural presence of the object- how the object takes up space as well as how it shapes the space around it. Surface treatment is directed toward shaping the space within the space. Form and surface: that’s all we have to work with.
I look to non-pottery sources for influence, and am drawn primarily to architectural forms as well as Chinese bronzes. I believe that traditional Indonesian wooden boats are among the finest forms ever made, and hope someday to make an object of such quality. Rarely are these influences used consciously. I prefer to witness, sublimate, and incorporate the images into the self of myself so that my heart and hands may do the real work.

*Teapots that are purchased will remain on display in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, through September 14, 2026.
After the show closes, teapots will be carefully packed and shipped by September 28, or they may be picked up at the gallery.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0570/8146/2941/files/142-1GlennDair-SpearmintRedTeapeepic1.jpg?v=1776361389
delanie-wise-yellow-iron-tea
Delanie Wise - Yellow Iron Tea

Delanie Wise
Massachusetts

Stoneware thrown, altered, and fired to Cone 10 in a soda reduction kiln.
Functional
7.5"w x 6"l x 4.25"h

About the Teapot
This teapot is inspired by 17th-century irons.

Artist Statement
I fell in love with clay forty years ago. Initially, the work consisted of functional pieces like plates, bowls, and jars. Several of the designs became production pieces. Due to the repetition, I became bored. I took courses in other mediums and stopped doing production work and started applying what I learned to clay. It was then that clay became fun again. Besides making thrown and altered pieces, I make slab constructions, using textures and pinched additions. The work is done slowly and thoughtfully. Each decision is savored. There is freedom to change my original concept, to start over, to change the spout, the handle, the foot until I can feel myself smile.
My goal is to make my pieces animated. Clay lends itself to animation because each touch is recorded; every addition affects the piece in unexpected ways. In the middle of working on a piece, I discover that the piece is based on my favorite aunt, sea creatures, or a fairy tale. Sometimes it’s my subconscious working, and my friends point out that the basket I’m making is really a bassinet. I grew up around Native American artifacts and American antiques. I learned to appreciate the intimate qualities of aged objects: the textures of rusty iron and crawling paint on old furniture, and even the musty smell of ripened books and magazines. Things that come with embedded narrative and a worn history have always surrounded me, and therefore, influence me. I am attracted to nostalgia and drawn to the curious — to something unusual but familiar — to something that creates a linkage across time.
Many of the objects I create join the realms of sculpture and utility. I am not always concerned with “pretty,” though I believe that form, color, and shape are important. The notion of function in my work is also important but is not the primary focus. Everything shifted in my second year when I took a ceramics class. I quickly connected with sgraffito, a process of applying contrasting slip to clay and carving back through it. It let me merge drawing with form, and soon I was building sculptures that combined two‑dimensional illusion with three‑dimensional space. Specifically, my utilitarian work is most satisfactory when a single object occupies space as both a useful object and one that also embodies loftier ideas such as beauty, connectedness and shared kinesthetic experiences.

I explore consumption and the use of natural resources as themes in my work. I choose the ceramic vessel to marry industrial form and surfaces with my thoughts about our consumer culture. I enjoy the interplay of roles between the utilitarian form as an object for eating and that of a conceptual vehicle for expression about global consumption. Now, thanks to the wonders of mass production and mass media, our memories of sensory experiences are nearly identical. These memories unify us but are only made possible by cheap consumerism and a throwaway extractive culture. Still, they belong to us and remind us that the most tactile artifacts of our memories are also often the most disposable: our birthday cakes, our favorite t-shirts, the packaging of our favorite treats, et cetera. Made of several diverse parts (lid, spout, body, and handle) they must work in unison to make a functional and visual whole. Issues like pouring, dripping, lid fit, and balance are not easily resolved. Ultimately, there is also an expression of stylistic identity expressed as well. This piece hopefully demonstrates all of these attributes.

About the Artist
I have been a ceramic artist in Seattle since 1968 and have worked predominately in porcelain on the potter’s wheel. My forms are defined by functional simplicity and the white surface of each piece is decorated with abstract brushwork in blues, browns and grays.
My designs are derived from the geometric patterning on crystal-glass, stitching on quilts, button tufted upholstery and golf ball dimples. The feet and rims on my vessels are strongly defined, creating a framework to place my designs in. When I went to the University of Washington in the early 1970s, my professors were Bob Sperry, Patti Warashina, and Howard Kottler. They all had a huge impact on my future, but it was Bob Sperry who left an indelible imprint on my work that continues today. My work is primarily inspired by eighteenth- and nineteenth-century decorative arts, particularly utilitarian silver tableware and Sèvres porcelain. I am also deeply influenced by the beauty and complexity of plant forms in nature. By thoughtfully integrating historical and natural references with function, I strive to create work that expresses a cohesive, singular artistic vision.

*Teapots that are purchased will remain on display in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, through September 14, 2026.
After the show closes, teapots will be carefully packed and shipped by September 28, or they may be picked up at the gallery.
