All my work is based on utilitarian archetypes but influenced by architecture. I make teapots because of the challenge and because I love the expressive nature of the gesture, driven by the thrust of the spout. These will hold tea (not much) and pour (strangely). They are designed to give the owner something new to look at with each viewing.

About the Artist
I really love moving clay around, and am fascinated by the changing moods of this medium. I approach the work as a dialog or a partnered dance, listening and following as much as directing. Most of my work starts on the wheel, but doesn’t stay that way. I just can’t leave anything alone. I strive to throw like a hand builder, and will work on a piece until it surprises me with its newness. The work is mostly founded on utilitarian context (“teapot”, “lidded jar”, “bowl”’ etc.), but often not restricted by usefulness. I am more interested in the gesture of the genre, and am concerned with the sculptural presence of the object- how the object takes up space as well as how it shapes the space around it. Surface treatment is directed toward shaping the space within the space. Form and surface: that’s all we have to work with.
I look to non-pottery sources for influence, and am drawn primarily to architectural forms as well as Chinese bronzes. I believe that traditional Indonesian wooden boats are among the finest forms ever made, and hope someday to make an object of such quality. Rarely are these influences used consciously. I prefer to witness, sublimate, and incorporate the images into the self of myself so that my heart and hands may do the real work.

*Teapots that are purchased will remain on display in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, through September 14, 2026.
After the show closes, teapots will be carefully packed and shipped by September 28, or they may be picked up at the gallery.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0570/8146/2941/files/142-1GlennDair-SpearmintRedTeapeepic1.jpg?v=1776361389
lucy-dierks-green-fall-teapot-with-blue-robin
Lucy Dierks - Green Fall Teapot with Blue Robin

Lucy Dierks
North Carolina

Porcelain wheel-thrown and altered teapot with hand-sculpted bird.
Functional
5.25"w x 3.5"l x 4.5"h

About the Teapot
Something about birds speaks to me. Things that come with embedded narrative and a worn history have always surrounded me, and therefore, influence me. I choose the ceramic vessel to marry industrial form and surfaces with my thoughts about our consumer culture. I enjoy the interplay of roles between the utilitarian form as an object for eating and that of a conceptual vehicle for expression about global consumption. I suspect there will never come a day when I'm not fascinated by how each piece takes shape. There's simply no detail about the process, whether trimming, altering, or glazing, that I don't enjoy. The same holds for the excitement I feel opening the gas or wood kiln after a firing. When a kiln comes out, I look to figure out what will come next. Each pot is a one-off, be it a vase or mug. A needle-felted owl rests in the glen.
Night Owl Tea re-imagines the domestic teapot as a vessel that defies the confines of the kitchen ushering in the wonder, mystery, and complexity of the woods and wilds. Inspired by the natural world and evoking the owl as observer and guardian, the piece invites a sense of mutual, reflective contemplation.
The teapot is constructed from many individually machine-embroidered fiber “leaves,” each created by layering threads, metallic foil confetti, and Angelina fibers between water-soluble fabric. Once embroidered, the backing is dissolved; what remains are freestanding leaves, sculpted over temporary molds and then removed. These components are assembled into a hollow structure using fabric sculpting medium.
The surface shimmers and shifts with changing light, suggesting movement and fragility that belie its structural integrity. A needle felted owl, with glass eyes and a paper clay beak, crowns the form, merging sculpture, embroidery, and felting.
Through this process, I explore fiber’s capacity to transcend its expected softness, becoming both structure and surface. Night Owl Tea reflects my ongoing interest in pushing fiber beyond traditional boundaries – transforming it into a medium of invention, depth, and expressive form.

About the Artist
Meryl Ruth has gained international recognition for creating high-quality, intricately detailed, imaginative ceramic and fiber art.
