I am currently experimenting with the creation of (isolated) reduction atmospheric conditions using sagger containers within the (normally) oxidation atmosphere of an electric kiln. I have experimented with the reduction-cooling process of high iron clay bodies and glazes in the wood kiln, but this exhibition teapot is the result of firing in a sealed sagger container with natural wood, lump charcoal in order to achieve some of the same reduction-cooled results and/or completely differing effects using a white glaze absent of any iron.
All of my teapots have been constructed with the use of an internal clay sieve that allows not only the use of tea bags, but if one prefers, loose tea. This clay sieve is perforated with many hand-drilled holes. The dome-shaped sieve is made separately and then permanently attached just behind the spout. Its shape allows for a larger surface area of small holes to permit a constant flow of the tea, even if some of the holes get clogged by the tea leaves.

About the Artist
Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, Jamie and his wife, Susan, moved to Seattle, Washington, in 2007, where Jamie was accepted as an artist-in-residence at Pottery Northwest. They then moved to Golden, Colorado, in 2009, where Jamie completed construction of a studio and a Bourry box “Train-Style” wood-kiln, as well as a gas- and wood-fired sagger kiln. The family moved to Machipongo, VA, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, in 2020, where Jamie has created a reimagined Bourry-box “Train-style” wood-kiln design and a gas- and wood-fired sagger kiln. Jamie works as a studio potter and as an instructor at Eastern Shore’s Own Art Center (ESO) in Belle Haven, VA. He is also a member of the ESO Board of Directors. Jamie is a member of the Artisans’ Guild of the ESVA and participates in the ESVA Artisans’ Guild Annual Holiday Tour.

Artist Statement
Historical references establish the foundation of my work. It is this rich inspirational history and investigation that allows me to continue to enjoy the creative process. I am inspired by both traditional and contemporary trends in ceramics. My former educational interest and research in geology often combines with these influential trends to achieve a finished product.
As an instructor, the lessons learned from former professors as well as personal developments in teaching have become the foundation for my instruction to others. It is my belief that this knowledge needs to be passed on to maintain the strength and recognition of the ceramic arts.

*Teapots that are purchased will remain on display in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, through September 14, 2026.
After the show closes, teapots will be carefully packed and shipped by September 28, or they may be picked up at the gallery.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0570/8146/2941/files/220-5JamieKirkpatrick-PinwheelMedallionTeapotpic1.jpg?v=1778023625
