Made of several diverse parts (lid, spout, body, and handle) they must work in unison to make a functional and visual whole. Issues like pouring, dripping, lid fit, and balance are not easily resolved. Ultimately, there is also an expression of stylistic identity expressed as well. This piece hopefully demonstrates all of these attributes.

About the Artist
I have been a ceramic artist in Seattle since 1968 and have worked predominately in porcelain on the potter’s wheel. My forms are defined by functional simplicity and the white surface of each piece is decorated with abstract brushwork in blues, browns and grays.
My designs are derived from the geometric patterning on crystal-glass, stitching on quilts, button tufted upholstery and golf ball dimples. The feet and rims on my vessels are strongly defined, creating a framework to place my designs in. In order to accentuate the geometric patterning on each vessel I use glazes that will break and pool over the indented lines.

Artist Statement
It is my belief that artists do not spring from nowhere. They are the result of their teachers, mentors, and peers. Over the years, I have been very fortunate to have had great influences and role models, beginning in high school with Bob Gee. When I went to the University of Washington in the early 1970s, my professors were Bob Sperry, Patti Warashina, and Howard Kottler. They all had a huge impact on my future, but it was Bob Sperry who left an indelible imprint on my work that continues today. It is for this reason that I include their work on this page to demonstrate the impact they each made.

*Teapots that are purchased will remain on display in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, through September 14, 2026.
After the show closes, teapots will be carefully packed and shipped by September 28, or they may be picked up at the gallery.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0570/8146/2941/files/251-1SamScott-BlackandWhiteTeapotpic1.jpg?v=1778621207
