Blue Crab - Wood Fired

$175.00

Two blue crabs fired in a wood kiln. Crab A measures approximately 8.5" long, 12.5" wide, and 2.25" deep. Crab B measures approximately 7.25" long, 12.5" wide, and 3" deep. Suitable for displaying both indoors and outside. Each crab is hand-sculpted and glazed. Individual forms and coloration are unique and will vary. Sold separately.

Wood firing is Alan’s favorite firing process!  He uses slips, shino slip, red slip and albany slip in the woodfire kiln. Alan and Rosemary use the wood kiln to fire deep sea fish such as manta ray, monk, angler, scorpion, tuna, and octopus. Much thought and care go into how each piece is loaded into the wood kiln, since the placement in the kiln affects the final appearance of the glaze. The temperature of the kiln is brought up to Cone 9 (about 2300 degrees F).

About Alan & Rosemary Bennett

Experiences in and around the water have strongly influenced the work of Alan and Rosemary Bennett. The process begins with a series of sketches. Next, they create the primary forms using stoneware, clay, or porcelain. The forms are hollowed out, and the porcelain teeth and eyes are added. The pieces are bisque fired, and glazes are applied by dipping, spraying and brushing. Lastly, the pieces are fired a second time using one of a variety of firing techniques including Raku, reduction firing, wood firing, and others.
