About the Artist
Andy Boswell is a second-generation potter based in Sugar Loaf, New York, and specializes in fine porcelain forms with crystalline glazes.

Andy’s father, Ray Boswell, brought him into the pottery studio at an early age and immersed him in the American Folk Art Pottery tradition. Skill, efficiency, and attention to subtle, ergonomic details shaped his foundation. From 2003 to 2007, he studied ceramics at the Rochester Institute of Technology, learning under Julia Galloway, Rich Hirsch, and Liz Howe. These professors deepened his appreciation for both the enduring beauty of historical ceramics and the expressive potential of contemporary art.

Artist Statement
My work is about exploring a specific type of beauty. Beauty where the process is as intricate, delicate and refined as the result. Beauty that captivates, inspires and brings joy to us as we unravel and understand its complexities.
Crystalline Glazed Porcelain has this type of beauty. The process is so difficult and requires so much work. There are so many delicate techniques I need to perform with extreme expertise. I need to have precise control over the science of the materials while my sense of aesthetics is constantly tested. This all builds up to the moment where I take my hands away, give up the controls, present my work to the kiln and let nature make the final marks. The crystals
organically grow on the surface and craft a level of detailed splendor that can’t be found anywhere else.
In this there are so many hidden harmonies between what we would consider opposites. I make the difficult look easy. I impose so much control but ultimately let go. What I make is man-made but also, nature made. The scientific and the artistic come together.
These vessels hold so much more than coffee and tea. They hold a beauty that runs deep. That beauty is what my work is about.
