About the Teapot
This teapot, part of a series of functional wares, is based on my childhood experiences living in the woods in Central Maryland. I spent many years roaming the woods and exploring the nature found there. As a child (and later as an adult) with a vivid imagination, I found the idea of imaginary forest creatures to be a deep well of inspiration.
The teapot is created with stoneware clay. It is wheel thrown with hand-built additions. It is underglazed and glazed.
About the Artist
Annie Boyer is a sculptor who works in ceramics and mixed media, focusing on fantasy creatures and plant life. Her work incorporates both wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques. Annie was born in Frederick, MD, and lived on a farm, in the deep woods, and at a plant nursery at various times during her childhood. Living in these places deeply informed the work she has created throughout her career. She lives in Brunswick, MD, and has lived in Maryland, New York City, and New Jersey. Annie graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, with a BA in Art Studio and a minor in Art History. She holds an MA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA in Ceramics from Hood College in Frederick, MD.
Artist Statement
My work explores fantasy creatures, their environments and the idea of world-buliding. The creatures and plant life that I create are fantastic and otherworldly. They can be cute and appealing or have a dark side. Many of my creatures display hybridization of various animals and plants. Some are recognizable and some are completely new.
