About the Teapot
I was inspired to make this teapot by the play on words.  Since I frequently feature animals in my work, naturally I thought of “Joy to the World”.  It is mostly stoneware, with the addition of casting slip decoration.  The Tray (“Jeremiah”) is intended to provide a little humor and bears the inscription (unseen unless the teapot is lifted):

                                     Lips that touch liquor
                                    Shall not touch mine

-A slogan of the Temperance Movement

About the Artist
As a Design major at Duke University, Betsy was trained in drawing, painting, and printmaking. Early in her career she taught art, but she later became fascinated with clay and the endless possibilities it offered. She has participated in workshops with nationally recognized ceramic artists and potters, including Ruth Ann Tudball, Kathy Triplett, Don Davis, Leah Leitson, Silvie Granatelli, Michael Sherrill, Alan Bennett, Julia Galloway, Dina Wilde‑Ramsing, Akira Satake, Alice Ballard, Debra Fritts, Lisa Clague, Nancy Kubale, Adrian Arleo, and Michelle Gregor.

Artist Statement
I work in clay to create both functional and sculptural pieces. Using wheel‑throwing, hand‑building, and sculpting techniques, I often combine these methods to achieve unique effects. I use a variety of firing processes, including electric kiln, soda kiln, wood kiln, pit firing, and raku.

Animals and plants appear frequently in my work, as I’m drawn to the organic forms found in nature. I may highlight a particular plant or animal that interests me—sometimes because it’s endangered, sometimes simply because it’s overlooked. Stories also inspire my sculptural pieces, which may carry humor, mystery, or more serious commentary.
I love the creative process, watching ideas move from concept to reality… and I love sharing the finished work with others.

*Teapots that are purchased will remain on display in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, through September 14, 2026.
After the show closes, teapots will be carefully packed and shipped by September 28, or they may be picked up at the gallery.
