About the Teapot
Wheel-thrown teapot featuring layered, abraded slips and a three-to-four-finger oval handle, finished with a silky slate surface across the knob, handle, spout, and foot. A textured base layer was applied first, followed by three layers of colored slips brushed over the form. Once dry, the surface was carefully sanded to reveal the underlying textures and colors. After firing, the piece was wet-sanded again, creating a smooth, weathered, stone-like feel that sits comfortably in the hands.
About the Artist
Growing up in Huntington Beach, CA., Eric discovered ceramics in high school. He went on to earn a BA in ceramics at San Diego State University, and an MFA from Alfred University, N.Y., in 1990. He then moved to Helena, Montana, to be a resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation. At the end of his residency in 1993, Eric set up a pottery studio and has enjoyed living and working in Helena ever since.
Artist Statement
I am happiest when making useful things, and am inspired by the fact that, despite thousands of years of pottery making, we can still leave our studios today having created something new. The idea of form following function still rings true for me, however; I believe that function can sometimes be persuaded to follow sculptural form, creating an interesting dialogue between utility and sculpture.
*Teapots that are purchased will remain on display in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, through September 14, 2026.
After the show closes, teapots will be carefully packed and shipped by September 28, or they may be picked up at the gallery.
