About the Teapot
Handle hand-made of copper tubing and wire. This is an excellent example of my glaze.
About the Artist
I work with porcelain and stoneware. My pots are thrown, thrown and altered, or hand-built. To achieve visual depth in my patterning, I employ five elements. Four of these - wax resist, latex, dipping, and brushwork of glazes - are applied to bisqued pots. The pots are then high-fired in a reduction atmosphere to trap carbon in the base glaze. It is trapped carbon that is the fifth and random element.
Even though I’m inspired by ancient forms—bells and boxes and ceremonial vases—I want my forms to be as contemporary as possible. My glazes, on the other hand, can reflect more of an ancient patina look. I use a gas kiln, which gives a very different glaze than an electric kiln. But even though the glazes insinuate age, I don’t want my pots to look old. I consider myself a modernist. That creates a kind of tension.
My home and studio are located in central Denver, Colorado. Working full-time, I produce six bodies of work a year. Each body of work offers me the opportunity to explore new ideas and refine existing ones. I’m intrigued by the marriage of form and decoration. In striving to integrate these in each pot, I have the opportunity to create work that is both timeless and modern.
