Wheel thrown stoneware with copper glaze fired in cone 8 oxidation

About the Teapot
I enjoy playing with the glaze qualities that occur round the edges of wax resist brushwork and dipping patterns. The flashing that appears even in an oxidation firing gives the effect of an atmospheric kiln. I’ve modified my glaze to accentuate these reactions. Here, the circle and horizon line can be experienced by the user as a simple graphic design, as the moon, as a sunrise or sunset, or even a solar eclipse. I also love the tactile experience of feeling the matte glaze and the grittier exposed stoneware together.
About the Artist
I had a happy childhood—one with a mother who taught me how to use power tools and a father who showed me how to scramble eggs. I was raised on fresh milk and cheese from a local farm and by a family that valued honesty, hard work, intellect, and creativity. I have been making things with my hands ever since. When I discovered clay in 1992 as a student at SUNY New Paltz, I knew I had met my match. I practiced on the potter’s wheel until my heart and hands were speaking the same language.
Artist Statement
My intention is to create pots that are shared among friends, welcomed at your table, and invited into your daily conversations—to hide out in your cupboards while you’re away or wait patiently in the dish rack for their next encounter. This life they lead is not just my imagination; they are infused with energy and emotion. Each pot hopes for that perfect curve, the most comfortable handle, and the thoughtful lines and edges that ask to be held, used, and valued.
*Teapots that are purchased will remain on display in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, through September 14, 2026.
After the show closes, teapots will be carefully packed and shipped by September 28, or they may be picked up at the gallery.
