Spalted Maple Bowl - Large

$329.00

Hand‑turned from spalted maple, this bowl is a striking blend of natural beauty and skilled craftsmanship. The wood’s distinctive markings create rich, varied patterns, ensuring every bowl is truly one of a kind. At approximately 15" in diameter and 6" tall, it’s a generous size for serving salads, fruit, or bread, and equally stunning as a sculptural centerpiece.
To maintain the wood’s natural luster, apply mineral oil once a month. Avoid prolonged exposure to water, and never submerge the bowl or place it in the dishwasher. Letting old produce sit at the bottom may cause staining, and the bowl should never be placed in the oven.

About Spencer Peterman

Spencer Peterman has a knack for spotting beauty where most people see only decay. When he finds a fallen tree —moss‑covered and weathered, he gets genuinely excited. Inside those logs is wood transformed by time and nature, its grain marked by early stages of decomposition. When Spencer turns that wood on the lathe, it becomes a bowl with striking, one‑of‑a‑kind character.
Nearly all of the wood he works with comes from locally fallen trees in Western Massachusetts—maple, cherry, black walnut, and more. The maple bowls, in particular, reveal dramatic patterns created by aging and decomposition, known as “ambrosia” or “spalting.” These natural markings are part of what makes each piece unique.
