About the Teapot
Oiseau du Matin was inspired by the beautiful inlaid bird cabochons that I used on the top and around the sides of my teapot. I’m not sure where they were made, but I’ve always loved them. The French title translates to Morning Bird; for some reason, the shape of the pot reminds me of Paris. A nice memory.

About the Artist
Jan Huling was born and raised in the Midwest and currently resides in Jersey City. She is a self-described Beadist and has been practicing her art since 2001, following a successful career as a commercial artist. Inspired by artists such as Nick Cave and Zenobia Bailey, as well as the work of the Huichol Indians of Mexico and traditional arts from India and around the globe, Jan has created a style immediately recognizable as her own.
Her work has been featured in many books and periodicals, as well as in galleries and museums, including the American Visionary Art Museum, Montclair Art Museum, Racine Art Museum, and Fuller Craft Museum, and can be found in numerous private collections around the world. In 2024, Jan was given a solo show, Everything Is Alive, at the Morris Museum, and is currently preparing for a solo show in St. Louis in September and an upcoming three-person show at the Monmouth Museum. Her signature piece, The Gown: Affinity, is on display at the Museum of Beadwork in Portland, Maine.

Artist Statement
Having worked for many years as a commercial artist, designing everything from textiles & dinnerware, ribbon & holiday decor, in 2008, I chose to make a break with my commercial past and newly dedicate myself to the glass seed bead.
My goal and technique has been the transformation of mundane sculptural forms into spectacular, meaningful, hypnotic works of art. Each piece is a meditation of color and form, pattern and texture that is allowed to grow organically without plans or sketches. With each new row of beads, I more clearly see the personality of the piece emerging, and it tells me what color needs to follow, what line needs to intersect. I listen.

*Teapots that are purchased will remain on display in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, through September 14, 2026.
After the show closes, teapots will be carefully packed and shipped by September 28, or they may be picked up at the gallery.
